An opportunity has arisen to commission an artistic video documentation of the first ever Curating Lab led by Christine Eyene, featuring sound artist Elsa M’bala with local participants, and artist and DJ Mo Laudi, as part of OORtreders Festival (Belgium) 18 – 23 October 2020.
The Curating Lab developed by Christine Eyene takes Pelt (Belgium) as point of departure, and its position as border municipality – neighbouring Germany and the Netherlands – to explore the notion of ‘man-made’ or ‘unnatural’ borders. It proposes to consider nature as a porous or permeable environment and a collective reconciliatory space.
While Belgium is a country which capital is home to a ‘borderless’ continent, freedom of movement remains a relative concept when approached from the perspective of migratory histories and displacement. The Curating Lab will envisage sonic memory as a form of anchorage to histories and places, like a score one carries within oneself, through life and migratory journeys. These sonic anchors are also imagined as repositories from which one draws comfort and healing in times of uncertainty and unrest.
The local participants from diverse cultural heritage will create a new sound piece reflecting on the migration experiences with Elsa M’bala, that will premiere on Friday 23 October 2020, along with a performance of a new commission by Mo Laudi.
We are looking for an emerging or mid-career video artist, also working with sound, whose practice engages with cultural diversity or migration narratives, to document this new project. The artist should be available 18/19 to 25 October.
We are also seeking for talk hosts, knowledgeable in sound art, identity politics and cultural diversity, to be in conversation with the curator and artists as part of OORtreders Festival series of talks Sunday 25 October.
The video artist and talk hosts should preferably be based in Belgium or neighbouring country.
