Making Histories Visible launches the MHV Lecture Series on Wednesday 17 February 2016 with a lecture by Christine Eyene, art historian, curator and Guild Research Fellow in Contemporary Art at the University of Central Lancashire.

Entitled The Exhibition Performed, this lecture/video/sound presentation focuses on “All of us have a sense of rhythm” an exhibition developed in 2015 for David Roberts Art Foundation, London. An original research into rhythmic patterns in material and immaterial productions within African traditional arts and contemporary cultures, the project included sculpture, photography, dance, music, sound and video arts.

Bringing together John Cage, African-American modern dance pioneers Syvilla Fort and Pearl Primus, Black literature with Léopold Sédar Senghor and Langston Hughes, alongside contemporary art practices, the exhibition was described as, breaking open assumed meeting points to forge new ones, by Salomé Voegelin who spoke of “a confident plural ethnography speaking for itself in a contemporary voice, claiming a complex origin and influence that demands we too reconsider the vantage points of canonical history…” (The Wire, issue 378, August 2015, p. 74).

After presenting it at World of Art (WOMAD, Malmesbury) and as part of Chimurenga’s Pan African Space Station (Fondation Cartier, Paris; The Showroom, London) Christine will introduce the research and curatorial process leading to the making of this exhibition. Making Histories Visible also invited artists Larry Achiampong and Evan Ifekoya to visit UCLan for the occasion. Larry will explore the varying ways in which he has approached sound in his studio practice, particularly with works such as Jam in The Dark (2008-present), the Mogya projects (2011-2013) and Finding Fanon (2015-present). Evan will focus on the mouth – the speech act, the silenced and the song. They will be joined by William Titley, artist, Director at In-Situ and Lecturer in Fine Art at UCLan who will discuss the making of Northern Souls: The Sound of an Underground (2014), and the fleeting moments of an-‘other’ reality via the exhausting and hypnotic nature of an all-night dance event recorded under the dance floor.

The MHV Lecture Series is developed by Making Histories Visible, an interdisciplinary visual arts research project based at the Centre for Contemporary Art (School of Art, Design and Fashion), University of Central Lancashire. The series invites local and international scholars, art practitioners, and creative professionals to deliver guest lectures in the field of contemporary arts from a culturally diverse perspective. Making Histories Visible is led by Lubaina Himid MBE, Professor of Contemporary Art.
