March starts off in Derby with FORMAT International Photography Festival. Curated by Louise Clements, Artistic Director of QUAD and FORMAT, organised and hosted by QUAD and the University of Derby, the festival presents a selection of the best of international photography. The programme of exhibitions and events is spread across multiple venues in Derby and extends to New Art Exchange, Nottingham, with the exhibition Residual Traces of the Black Body. This exhibition developed in collaboration with Making Histories Visible, the multidisciplinary project based at the University of Central Lancashire (UCLan), features work by Larry Achiampong, Cristiano Berti, George Hallett, Ingrid Pollard and Zanele Muholi who will also give a lecture at UCLan on Tuesday 17th March. On Thursday 19th March, exhibition curator Christine Eyene will give a presentation entitled Imag(in)ing the Black Body, to introduce the concept behind Residual and look at some of the issues around the representing the black body. This will be followed by a conversation with Zanele Muholi.
Other events planned as part of Residual include a workshop led by Ingrid Pollard and Eyene’s participation to FORMAT 2015 conference in Derby on 10th April.

UCLan has an exciting programme of lectures this month. After the visit of American artist Suzanne Lacy on 5th March, and in addition to Zanele Muholi, the university will be host to British-Nigerian writer Noo Saro-Wiwa on 16th March and Daniel Meadows on 24th March. Meadows is the founder of the Free Photographic Omnibus which collection is one of the most important photographic and audio records of UK society in the 1970s.

Changing landscape, the Nouveau Musée National de Monaco will open the second chapter of the exhibition Construire une Collection (Building a Collection) at Villa Sauber on 21st March. A selection of works acquired by the NMNM over the past ten years, the artists include Christian Boltanski, Mark Dion, Hans-Peter Feldmann, Claire Fontaine, Camille Henrot, Bertrand Lavier, to name but a few. The first installment of this exhibition is still on show at Villa Paloma. It notably features works by Richard Artschwager, Jean Dubuffet, Jan Fabre, Rebecca Horn, Anish Kapoor, Yinka Shonibare MBE, Su-Mei Tse, Cerith Wyn Evans, etc. Construire une Collection will be followed by a catalogue with contributions from Christine Eyene, Joao Fernandes, Simone Menegoi, Hans Ulrich Obrist, Chiara Parisi, Chris Sharp and more.

Probably the most anticipated news of the year: the announcement of the 56th Venice Biennale’s official selection. A historical event for being the first edition ever led by an African artistic director, Okwui Enwezor, All of the World’s Futures also promises a more inclusive representation of global art practices. In London, Pascale Marthine Tayou: Boomerang, the first solo show in London by the Cameroon-born Belgium-based artist, opened last week at the Serpentine Sackler Gallery.

Finally, in preparation: David Roberts Art Foundation’s next exhibition as part of the Curators’ Series. This series considers the curator as an author and supports curators by commissioning special research-based projects. Previous curators include Cylena Simonds (UK), Raimundas Malasauskas (Lithuania), Mihnea Mircan (Romania), Mathieu Copeland (UK), Simone Menegoi & Chris Sharp (Italy and US), Pablo Leon de la Barra (Mexico) and Vivian Ziherl (Australia) & Natasha Ginwala (India).
