Looking back at 2014, Design Indaba has listed Basket Case II as one of the six weaving projects from across the globe that exemplify the amazing creative potential of combining traditional crafts and contemporary design.

More polemical, last month, France’s heated debate around the representation of the black body in a much talked about installation/performance, has prompted an invitation from Artl@s, research project established at École Nationale Supérieure, Paris, to present and discuss some of the research and exhibitions dealing with this topic. The French conference entitled “La culture noire comme norme” will look at black culture as a position of enunciation in the field of contemporary art and will notably focus on aesthetics, iconography and the contexts that have led to an interest in the body and gender in art. The conference is taking place on Friday 9 January.

Speaking of gender, still on show at Fondation Blachère, “La Parole aux Femmes” (Women Speak Out) is running until 7 March 2015. First exhibition of the kind in France, it presents the work of emerging and internationally acclaimed African and African-American women artists.

On the same topic, Tate Modern is announcing a call for papers in preparation for the conference “Fast Forward: Women in Photography – Then and Now” scheduled on 6 and 7 November 2015. This call for papers and artist’s presentations is looking for submissions that explore the significance of women’s photographic practices both historical and contemporary, addressing key themes pertinent to current photography research and to celebrate the best work produced by women in photography. Deadline 19 January 2015.

End of January, researchers from the Institute for Black Atlantic Research (IBAR) launched last year at the University of Central Lancashire, will present interdisciplinary projects developed in the UK and internationally in the field of history, literature and arts. See more information here.
