Throughout 2019 – 2021, Chisenhale Gallery is working in partnership with The Institute of Contemporary Arts, BBC Arts and Arts Council England to present a new commissioning opportunity for young people. New Creatives is a series of commissioning opportunities for emerging artists aged 16 – 30 years who work with audio or moving image. Successful applicants are invited to present their work in a dedicated showcase at the ICA and their work may also be selected to be broadcast on television and radio under BBC Introducing Arts, made available on BBC iPlayer or BBC Sounds.
Over two years Chisenhale Gallery will work with four artists, providing mentoring and support to develop new commissions from initial idea through to final work. Between April and June 2019, Chisenhale Gallery worked with artist Tom Foskett-Barnes on a new audio commission, an aural exploration of the LGBT+ helpline, Switchboard, founded in March 1974. Listen to Foskett-Barnes’ work online here.
We are working with artist and writer Sarah Roselle Khan to produce Inside Out, a new short film that combines archival footage of everyday British-Pakistani culture with text and monologue written and performed by Khan. The work, which is currently in production, reflects on her experience of growing up in Britain, from a mixed heritage and working-class British Muslim family.
This newly launched initiative provides the opportunity for young people, based in London, to produce new work with the support of industry professionals. Chisenhale Gallery is one of six production partners including the ICA, Kingston School of Art, NTS, SPACE, Dazed Media and Werkflow.
