The Jameel Prize is an international award for contemporary art and design inspired by Islamic tradition. The Prize aims to explore the relationship between contemporary practice and Islamic tradition as part of a wider debate about Islamic culture in the twenty-first century.
The V&A houses one of the world’s great collections of Islamic art from the Middle East. We began to collect art from the Islamic world in the 1850s, and were the first institution in the world to do so with a purpose. This can be seen at its best in the splendid Jameel Gallery of Islamic Art.
The past achievements of the Islamic world in art, craft and design are reflected in the work of many contemporary practitioners.
The Jameel Prize was established by the V&A in 2009 and is run in partnership with Art Jameel. There have been five editions since the Prize began.
The Jameel Prize is open to artists and designers from any ethnic, religious or cultural background.
The sixth edition of the Jameel Prize is devoted to contemporary design inspired by Islamic tradition.
Applications to Jameel Prize 6 are open from until 31 May 2020. The Prize is open to designers of any age, from any background, living anywhere in the world. It is free to enter.
To be eligible for the Jameel Prize, a designer’s work must:
- Have a clear link to the history, culture, art, craft, or design practice of the Islamic world.
- Demonstrate outstanding skill and quality of concept, and inspire new ways of thinking about contemporary design or Islamic culture.
A group of finalists will be selected by the jury, and an exhibition of their work will open at the V&A in the summer of 2021, before touring internationally.
The winner will be announced at the exhibition opening.
