Pavilion and the School of Fine Art History of Art and Cultural Studies, University of Leeds, welcome Christine Eyene for a talk on her curatorial and research practice. This event takes place as part of an on-going series of activities exploring what it means to curate, commission and produce contemporary art in urban cultural centres.
For this presentation, Christine will introduce her latest exhibitions and discuss how her research and curatorial practice challenges instances of under-representation within mainstream arts and cultures. She will also address questions of criticality in relation to identity politics, the recent shifts within contexts of marginalisation, and how these are informing discursive changes in her upcoming projects.

Christine Eyene is an art historian, critic and curator. She is a Research Fellow in Contemporary Art at the University of Central Lancashire where she collaborates to Making Histories Visible, an interdisciplinary visual arts research project based at UCLan’s Centre for Contemporary Art, led by Professor Lubaina Himid. She is also a PhD candidate at Birkbeck, University of London, with Professor Annie E. Coombes, and is writing her dissertation on the work of South African photographer George Hallett.
Her areas of research and curatorial practice range from contemporary African and Diaspora arts, Black British arts, gendered art discourses, to non-object-based art practices, notably sound art. Her other interests include: socially engaged urban cultures, music and design.
Christine has been a nominator for Prix Pictet – The global award in photography and sustainability since 2013. That same year she was a nominator for the Visible Award and member of its jury in 2015. Since September 2015, she has joined the acquisition committee of FRAC, Fonds Régional d’Art Contemporain, Réunion led by Béatrice Binoche.
