Liverpool School of Art and Design and Liverpool Biennial announce a joint artist residency for the 13th Liverpool Biennial
Liverpool School of Art and Design and Liverpool Biennial are delighted to collaborate on a joint artist residency for the 13th Liverpool Biennial, taking place 7 June – 14 September 2025.
Awarded to visual artist, researcher, and educator Dawit L. Petros (Eritrea/Canada/USA), the residency is part of a long-term partnership between Liverpool School of Art and Liverpool Biennial, and demonstrates a shared commitment to supporting artistic research, enriching local art ecosystems, and inspiring new generations of art students and researchers. The residency is supported by The Institute of Art and Technology and open to all researchers.
Dawit L. Petros’s work is informed by studies of global modernisms, theories of diaspora, and postcolonial studies. During his residency, Petros will further develop his interest in first person narratives in colonial libraries, and the networks that span between port cities, such as Liverpool, that underpinned their creation. Centred around Petros’s research for his new work for Liverpool Biennial 2025, the residency is a shared journey through Liverpool’s libraries, archives, and collections, unfolding through a series of exchanges and workshops with the Faculty, doctoral researchers, and students, and a public presentation at our public facing venue, ERL – Exhibition Research Lab.
Professor Joasia Krysa, Director of Institute of Art and Technology, said: “This residency, part of our long-term partnership with Liverpool Biennial and the Art School’s commitment to local cultural partnerships, is another example of how we can work together to support artists at every stage of their journey. Supporting research in the field of arts for social good and empowering the next generation of artists and researchers is at the heart of what the Institute does. We are delighted to welcome Dawit to our community of researchers – international artists, creative practitioners, curators, art historians – and to our state-of-the-art facilities, studio spaces, and public exhibitions venue, leading up to the launch of Liverpool Biennial 2025.”
Marie-Anne McQuay, Curator, Liverpool Biennial 2025, said: “I’m delighted that, through Liverpool School of Art and Design’s IAT – The Institute of Art and Technology, we can extend artist Dawit L Petros’s research time in Liverpool through a collaborative residency. He will bring his thoughtful & dynamic approach to practice to the Faculty and, at the same time, I know the exchanges he will have with LJMU students and researchers will enrich his understanding of the city and bring even greater depth to the work he produces for Liverpool Biennial 2025.”
