Performance: Elsa James: The Mary Prince Narratives – Part 3

Join us for a performance by Elsa James on the occasion of transfeminisms Chapter III: Fragile Archives.
transfeminisms artist Elsa James will present The Mary Prince Narratives – Part 3, performing excerpts from The History of Mary Prince, A West Indian Slave. Related by Herself (1831). Prince is the first known Black woman to relate a narrative about the experience of being enslaved, published in England. James’s performance will immerse the audience into Prince’s tragic ordeal and resilience.
She will be accompanied by cellist Kirke Gross.
This event is part of the ‘Black Voices’ public programme proposed by transfeminisms co-curator Christine Eyene.
About the artists
Elsa James is an artist and activist who lives and works in Essex. As a Black British woman, James’s practice is driven by a profound yearning to dig deep into, and engage with, her Caribbean and African heritage. She works across live performance, film, printmaking, spoken word, neon and sound to create artworks invested in an ongoing questioning of visibility and belonging that centres Blackness as a methodology for liberation. Recent solo exhibitions and performances include the National Maritime Museum, London (2024); Museum of London Docklands, London (2023); Tate Britain, London (2023); and Focal Point Gallery, Southend-on-Sea (2022). Her work is also included in group exhibitions at Copperfield, London (2024); The Art Museum at the University of Toronto, Canada (2024); a major Hayward Gallery Touring exhibition (2024-25); and Gagosian, London (2023).
Kirke Gross is an Estonian cellist and composer. She is active in the London music scene as an improviser and as part of different groups in experimental and pop music. She also has her own solo project – Ramilda. Recent performances this year include ONe_Orchestra New, Vortex (London) and Rush-hour Electroinstrumental music concert organised by Goldsmiths (London). In 2023, she was a resident at Hjorted Art and Music in Sweden.
