On Friday 2 June 2023 from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., the Institut français de Casablanca is hosting “Resisting Voices”, a conversation between Myriam Omar AwadiMeryam Benbachir and Christine Eyene, on historical and contemporary forms of feminist resistance, and their visual and performative representations.

This conversation will be followed by the opening of “Myriam Omar Awadi: Les feux que vos derniers souffles ravivent”, a performance developed with students from the Casablanca School of Fine Arts, and the projection of the artist’s video work on the Debe.

The Debe is an exclusively feminine ceremony born in the Comoros in the middle of the 19th century that disappeared in the 1950s with the growing influence of Western culture. Omar Awadi invites us to discover the freedom, insolence, and relevance of the words of these women who used to meet, dance and sing about the injustices and abuses of the authorities.

This event is part of the cultural programme “Art Speaks: Louder than Words” conceived and curated by Christine Eyene. The presence of the artist is supported by FRAC Réunion.
