Book Launch: SOUNDS LIKE HER
Join us at Café OTO for the launch of SOUNDS LIKE HER – Gender, Sound Art and Sonic Cultures, the new book accompanying the UK touring exhibition of the same name curated by Christine Eyene.
Published by New Art Exchange and Beam Editions, with essays by Eyene, Cathy Lane and Salomé Voegelin, SOUNDS LIKE HER challenges the Eurocentric approach and patriarchal frameworks that have informed the history of sound art and continue to dominate the scene today. The book proposes to broaden the discourses on the art form, and reframe how we experience the dynamic of sound through the practices of women from diverse cultures and gender identities. It includes works by Ain Bailey, Sonia Boyce OBE RA, Linda O’Keeffe, Christine Sun Kim, Elsa M’bala, Madeleine Mbida and Magda Stawarska-Beavan.
SOUNDS LIKE HER will be introduced by Christine Eyene joined by Cathy Lane and Salomé Voegelin who will perform a spoken intervention around curation, sound and text. This will be followed by a discussion between the authors and New Art Exchange curator Cindy Sissokho.
The ideas explored in the book will come to life through two sound performances by Ain Bailey and Government DJ AKA Evan Ifekoya.
Ain Bailey is a sound artist and DJ and one of the most respected practitioners working in the field today. Her compositions encompass field recordings and found sounds, and are inspired by ideas and reflections on silence and absence, architectural urban spaces, and feminist activism.
Government DJ is the (dj) moniker of artist Evan Ifekoya, providing a curriculum for the dance floor and State (un)sanctioned sounds. Spanning hydrophone recordings, healing frequencies, techno and trap – no sounds are off limits here.
Visitors to the event will have the opportunity to meet the curators, artists and authors involved in the project and pick up a signed copy of the book.
Books will be available for sale: Price: £20.00
