Mapping the Sonic

As part of WOMAD’s World of Art programme, curator Christine Eyene will introduce sound art practice in the context of Africa and the Diaspora through the work of Larry Achiampong (UK), Younes Baba-Ali (Morocco/Belgium) and Em’Kal Eyongakpa (Cameroon), three artists featured in the exhibition All Of Us Have A Sense Of Rhythm, developed by Eyene for the Curators’ Series #8 at David Roberts Art Foundation, London. She will also present some of the sound material that has informed the making of this exhibition including rhythmic structures of Cameroon’s Bikutsi music.
Date and venue: Sat 25/07/15 @ 1:00 pm, Global Voices tent

Over the past five years, World of Art has hosted a wide range of engaging arts forms by internationally acclaimed contemporary artists including Roman Signer, Anri Sala, Fischli and Weiss, Uriel Orlow, William Kentridge and Imogen Stidworthy. In this sixth edition, Barthélémy Toguo (Cameroon) is the artist in residence. His work for WOMAD, entitled Water Dance, is an outdoor installation taking inspiration from his childhood memories of Cameroon. Associate artist Nick Garnett (UK) has worked alongside Toguo, sourcing materials for Water Dance and grappling with the complexities of installing a large-scale artwork. Garnett has also created ‘Drops’, a participatory project which invites festival-goers to embark on journeys with water, words and images.

Barthélémy Toguo will be in conversation with Roger Malbert, Head of Hayward Touring, Hayward Gallery, writer and author of Drawing People (2015) published by Thames and Hudson.
Date and venue: Sun 26/07/15 @ 1:00 pm, Global Voices tent
